Generative engine optimization is the practice of making your company's content retrievable, quotable and citable inside AI-generated answers. Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search mode, Perplexity and Gemini all assemble an answer from sources they retrieve at query time, then name a handful of them. Your job is to be one of those sources. How Generative Engines Retrieve and Cite
Retrieval-augmented generation is the mechanism underneath most of this. The engine takes the user's question, expands it into several search-like queries, pulls candidate passages from an index of public web content, ranks those passages for relevance and trust, then writes an answer that stitches them together with inline citations. The model never "reads your homepage". It reads passages, and it reads them out of context.

- Distribution. Publish on your own site and place corroborating versions on authoritative third-party platforms, so the same claim appears in more than one retrievable place.

What Actually Gets Cited
Patterns show up across programs. The cited passages tend to be the ones that answer a question directly in the first two sentences, name the entity explicitly, and carry a number, a date or a named standard. Vague marketing prose almost never gets lifted, because there is nothing in it to lift.
Corroboration matters more than most teams expect. If your site says a product meets a standard and two independent industry publications say the same thing, the claim looks more solid to a retrieval system than the same claim standing alone. How to Measure Citations With Screenshots
